Warum ist Absinth so gefährlich?
Was stimmt ist: Absinth enthält nach wie vor das in Verdacht geratene Nervengift Thujon, das bei Aufnahme in hoher Konzentration Verwirrtheit und epileptische Krämpfe auslösen kann. Allerdings ist mittlerweile widerlegt, dass die im Absinth enthaltene Menge ausreicht um in gefährlichem Ausmaß giftig zu wirken.
Was ist Thujon im Absinth?
Die Wermutpflanze enthält zwei Hauptwirkstoffe, Absinthin (ein Alkaloid) und Thujon (ein mentholähnliches Terpen). Beide sind in hohen Dosen giftig. Thujon ist ein Molekül, das in mehreren Pflanzen enthalten ist, wie Thuja (von dem der Name abgeleitet ist), Wacholder, Oregano oder Salbei.
Warum ist Absinth verboten worden?
Vielleicht hast Du davon gehört, dass die Spirituose von 1915 bis 1991 verboten war. Einen triftigen Grund dafür gab es nicht; vielmehr wurde der Absinthe zu einer Art Sündenbock. So gab es schon immer Gegner der Spirituose. Sie nahmen 1905 einen Mord zum Anlass, dem Absinth eine negative Wirkung nachzusagen.

Thujon (mit einer Ketogruppe) ist wie Thujol, sein alkoholischer Verwandter (Alkoholgruppe), in hohen Dosierungen giftig. Das Nervengift Thujon wirkt bei richtiger therapeutischer Dosierung krampflösend, desinfizierend, schweißhemmend und schmerzberuhigend.
Was macht Thujon?
Entsprechend stärker ist also die Wirkung, sind doch Thujon als auch Alkohol psychoaktive Substanzen. Neben einer euphorisierenden, berauschenden und anregenden Wirkung, kann Absinth zu einem gesteigerten Farbempfinden sowie – in größeren Mengen- zu Halluzinationen und psychischen Problemen führen.
