Der intrinsisch motivierte Lernende lernt aus Interesse, Freude, Bedürfnis, also angetrieben vom zu lernenden Lernstoff. Erreicht wird das Interesse durch die Anwendung des Erlernten, es hat eine besondere Bedeutung für die persönliche Lebensgestaltung und ist Lösungsmöglichkeit für persönliche Probleme.
