What is a gradient wind?

The gradient wind is a balance of the Pressure Gradient Force, centrifugal and Coriolis. A geostrophic wind becomes a gradient wind when the wind begins flowing through curved height contours.

How does the gradient wind flow in curved height contours?

You stay with the car but it feels like you are being pushed sideways. The gradient wind occurs aloft (no friction) within curved height contours. The wind stays parallel to the height contours throughout the curve. The two examples below will be used to show how the flow stays parallel to the height contours.

What is the geostrophic wind speed?

The wind speed Vg is called the geostrophic wind speed and denoted by Vg. The balance is shown schematically in Fig. 12.3. Fig. 12.3 Geostrophic balance between the pressure gradient force (denoted by PG) and the Coriolis force (denoted by CO) when the isobar has no curvature L denotes Low pressure, H High

What are the two types of gradient flow?

Fig. 12.2 Balance of forces in two types of gradient flow commonly observed in the northern hemisphere: (a) a regular low (L); (b) a regular high (H). PG denotes pressure gradient force, CO Coriolis force, and CF centrifugal force.
